The generic drug Nexium is being recalled by Merck & Co Inc. in its attempt to reduce its drug sales to patients who have previously been prescribed the drug. The recalled drug is also being manufactured in a facility that has not previously been licensed by the CVS Caremark Pharmacy in New York City.
The recall is being conducted by FDA’s Consumer Law Enforcement Division, which will determine if the recalled drug is of comparable quality to the prior drug.
The FDA has not specified what the recalled drug could contain, but the company has received FDA approval to use the product and will continue to market the drug in the US.
In order for the recalled drug to be effective, the company has been issued with a warning on the label that the drug may be contaminated with “anaphylactic reactions” such as lactic acidosis, rash, and anaphylactic shock. The company has also received the FDA's request to stop the drug from being used in children.
The recalled drug has a “black box warning” for anaphylaxis, which refers to a reaction of liver enzymes such as lactate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase enzyme, which may be toxic to the liver. The drug can cause death and may cause signs of kidney damage, especially in children. The FDA has also received FDA approval to stop use of Nexium for the treatment of heart failure in patients with a previous history of cardiovascular disease. This drug has not been approved for use in children.
In the recalled drug’s packaging, the warning states that the recalled drug may cause a life-threatening condition known as “lactic acidosis” in children. The FDA has not yet determined if the drug’s label or packaging is safe for use in children, however the agency is advising patients not to purchase the drug.
The FDA has also received an “emergency response letter” from the manufacturer to clarify that the drug can cause “bloody or black stools, or bloody or bloody urine.” This letter will alert the FDA to the risk of having a blood clot in a patient who has had an allergic reaction to the drug, such as anaphylaxis.
The company has also received FDA approval for the recall of the drug, but there is a “black box warning” on the drug’s label stating that the drug may not be able to prevent heart attacks or strokes in patients who have already had heart disease. The FDA is also reviewing the drug’s label and packaging to determine if it is safe to use. The company is also working with a team of researchers at the University of Washington to identify potential heart injury risk.
The FDA is continuing to work with the manufacturers to determine what may be causing the drug to be recalled, as well as to ensure that the recall is effective. The FDA is also working with Merck to evaluate how the recalled drug may be used in children.
